Thoughts from Smarter People Than I

I like quotations from people smarter than I.  The idea behind searching through these ideas thrown out by change-makers and visionaries is no different than finding inspiration in art or religion.  Some folks out there rely on memes that support their own stasis - justifying their walk of status quo, of accepting the hive mind that cages us daily, that keeps them safe but deadened.

I'm inspired by the quotes that challenge me.  I am in spired by ideas that force me to move forward rather than rest on the cubicle desk chair (even though it is ergonomic and has wheels.)

Maybe these ideas will inspire you as well.

“Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself.” -- Robert Bennett

"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come." -- Joseph Campbell

“If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.” -- Robert Fritz

“At least one way of measuring the freedom of any society is the amount of comedy that is permitted, and clearly a healthy society permits more satirical comment than a repressive, so that if comedy is to function in some way as a safety release then it must obviously deal with these taboo areas. This is part of the responsibility we accord our licensed jesters, that nothing be excused the searching light of comedy. If anything can survive the probe of humour it is clearly of value, and conversely all groups who claim immunity from laughter are claiming special privileges which should not be granted.” -- Eric Idle

"If you live long enough, you'll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you'll be a better person. It's how you handle adversity, not how it affects you. The main thing is never quit, never quit, never quit." --  William J. Clinton

“Until a person can say deeply and honestly, "I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday," that person cannot say, "I choose otherwise” -- Stephen Covey

"Group conformity scares the pants off me because it's so often a prelude to cruelty towards anyone who doesn't want to - or can't - join the Big Parade." -- Bette Midler

“I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone.” -- Henry Rollins
