Tutoring Chicago’s Got Talent, or Hey Kids, Let’s Put on a Show at The Store

By Elizabeth Harper

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, the third annual Tutoring Chicago’s Got Talent will take place at The Store at 2002 N. Halsted in Chicago.

Tutoring Chicago’s Got Talent is a variety show featuring volunteer tutors and their friends performing music, comedy, poetry, and more. Current and potential volunteers and supporters will have a chance to socialize while enjoying the show. Donations and proceeds from raffle ticket sales will go to benefit Tutoring Chicago.

Tutoring Chicago (formerly known as The Cabrini Green Tutoring Program) has been part of Chicago’s history for over 50 years. Originally it was started by Montgomery Ward employees in 1965 to help the children in the Cabrini-Green Homes.

Now Tutoring Chicago is expanding and adding more locations in order to help more economically underprivileged children by providing free tutoring. Students benefit from one-on-one attention.

Tutoring Chicago is looking for more volunteers, especially at the Logan Square, Near West Side, and Hyde Park locations. Volunteers are matched with one student to work with throughout the school year once a week. It is a commitment, but well worth it since the benefits to the students are invaluable and the tutors enjoy interacting with the children and helping to meet the very real need for an affordable tutoring option for Chicago’s children.

Raffle prizes include gift cards or other items from Rocks Bar Group; Rosenberg Bookshop at the Newberry Library; Beauty Culture LLC; Uncharted Books; Open Books; Literate Ape and two tickets to the Jingle Mingle holiday gala happening at Chez on Dec. 6, put together by Tutoring Chicago’s Tutoring Associate Board (TAB).

Tutoring Chicago is a member of the Chicago Literacy Alliance, an association of more than 120 organizations devoted to improving literacy in Chicago.
