Do Nothing. Try Something Different. Choose.

by Don Hall

You are faced with a broken model of going about things. What the specifics of that model are are irrelevant. It simply is not working as either efficiently or pragmatically as you or everyone involved need it to be.

Your choices are really pretty simple. Do nothing and let the broken system continue on, relaxing in the safety of doing nothing (because doing nothing risks nothing and you can always hold out hope that maybe, one day, someone else can inherit the problem and then it isn't yours anymore). You can also spend a lot of time handwringing and whining about how broken the model is but that your hands are tied. There are some who actually benefit from the lack of efficiency and pragmatic outcomes of the broken model - better that some benefit at the peril of everyone else than actually stick your own neck out.

The other choice is to try something different. Perhaps not anything drastic or revolutionary but try something different. Tweak the model. Adjust it. Find ways to address the inefficiencies. Try to find ways to increase the number of people who benefit from the model.  Anything. Sure, you might try something that fails to change anything or even make it worse, but the choice to try something new is, as the corporate lingo indicates, proactive.

Let's assume that the 97% or so of scientists who claim irrefutable evidence of the devastation humans are doing to the climate of the planet are simply lying or just plain full of shit. Let's assume that the 3% of scientists commissioned by Big Oil are actually dead on right and that the ridiculous shifts in the weather are completely beyond our control.

Do nothing. Try something different. Choose.

Let's assume that those who propose to ban assault weapons are just wrong. And that those who believe fervently that every teacher, student, citizen (except for those undocumented immigrants and black people) should be unfettered in their desire to go out packing heat.  Let's assume that the ban on nuclear weapons is reasonable but that a ban on other weapons of multiple destructive capabilities is just outside of bounds.

Do nothing. Try something different. Choose.

In both cases, I ask what the harm in trying something different causes? I mean, in the end of it, why the fuck not try something different? If only to prove to the other side of things that they were miserably wrong and move on?

Why not?

Why not give the government subsidies enjoyed by the oil companies to new green energy companies to see if solar or wind or electric cars might be really awesome? Why not?

Why not just require Universal background checks on every gun purchase in the country? Just to prevent the wife-beaters and psychotics from purchasing them?

Why not create a non-police body to investigate police abuses?

Why not tweak campaign finance laws to open up the playing field to non-millionaires?

Why not fully fund public education?

Why not?
