I Believe… [Cosplayer is an Identity, Too]

By Don Hall

...that Avengers: Endgame is not merely a movie but the final chapter in a 22-episodic adventure that many of us have followed for eleven years. Now imagine waiting a year in between Game of Thrones episodes and you can kind of grasp the hype.

…that identity may be a kind of expertise but it is only an expertise in being oneself. The desire to tribe up and gain power through identifiers is a strong one but using your culture, skin color, gender, sex, or political leanings is absolutely no different than identifying as a cosplayer, a foodie, or a sports fan.

…that there should be a difference between feminism and misandry, between anti-racism and anti-white, and between punishment for crimes and revenge for offense.

…that the boiling down of the past to a list of grievances unaddressed at the time from a vantage of expanding morality only exchanges the supremacist whitewashing of history for washing it with just a different color of paint. History, if it is to be of any use to us at all, must be viewed as complex and nuanced or it’s a fucking waste of time.

...that like my love for peanut butter contrasted with the affect it has rendering my guts to a broiling hell and my love for teaching balanced by my disdain for children, my enjoyment of Captain Marvel is in direct counterpoint to the fact that I find Brie Larsen to be a joyless ass. I agree with her stance on diversity in critical voices and her support of women in film, but she has the personality of a clenched fist.
