Holding Our Collective Breath (While Wearing Masks)

by Don Hall

Sitting in traffic at a long light. In Vegas, the traffic lights can take a ridiculously long time to change. I chant under my breath as I stare intently in the red circle “Change to green. Change to green. Green. Green. Green.”

Unless there is a glitch in the light it will inevitably change to green but it has fuckall to do with my incantation. It is simply the cliche of watching the pot boil and the impatience of waiting for a result we really fucking want to occur. It’s maddening and yet we do it every single day.

“I’m sorry but I can’t think of a single good thing Trump has done for the country. Not one.”

“Well, there’s the economy before the plague hit.”

“Presidents don’t have that much control of the economy. They love to take credit but it simply doesn’t work that way.”

“Oh, sure. Give Obama credit but not Trump?”

“I don’t give Obama credit for the economy, either. And still nothing Trump has done or said has been anything but a disaster for America in four years.”

“Well, Biden isn’t much better...”

And it hits me.

“Did you vote already?”

“Yeah.”

“I did, too. Our decisions have been made. We don’t have to convince each other of anything. Just share perspectives.”

We’re a few days away from Election Day and likely weeks away from knowing who wins and loses and so many of us are on edge (“Turn Blue. Turn Blue. Blue. Blue. BLUE!”) but spending even a second worrying about it will make absolutely no difference. We voted. Others will, too. The decisions have been made and the votes will come in and what happens on January 21st is out of our hands.

If you haven’t voted, do so. Don’t be a dickhead. Make a choice and cast your vote.

I’m no longer interested in the partisan fight. I’m no longer interested in yelling at and being yelled at. What a colossal waste of fucking time. Wanna make some John Lewis ‘good trouble?’ Find those willing to discuss ideas they may find objectionable like adults and hash some stuff out. There will be a small contingency of children and man-babies who will commence to screaming and toting guns, looting and throwing cans at cops. Let ‘em.

The grown-ups are tired of the tantrums and are going to work shit out for everyone.
