Notes from the Post-it Wall | Week of June 14, 2020

By David Himmel

• You know what would make a good protest? No fireworks or firecrackers or barbecues on the Fourth of July. On a day celebrating America that fills the air with booms and bangs and lights and laughter, let’s make the whole country silent. Eerily silent. Because what do we have to celebrate? Even if you are a Blue Lives Matter/All Lives Matter, Trump-loving, Confederate flag-waving person, or any one of those things, you can’t deny that America needs a nap. Unless you enjoy discontent in the streets and millions of your fellow countrymen terrified at the thought of their futures. And if you do enjoy that, or at least, aren’t bothered by it, it’s obvious why you support any of the aforementioned signs of an asshole.

• Real debate is as dead as the Latin language.

• The thing that’s most making me miserable is how much I don’t care about a growing number of things that used to matter to me.

• Tastes change. I keep waiting for the day I like beets. Because I hate beets. Hate them. But as of two days ago, I kinda hated U2. And today, I don’t mind that band so much.

• You cannot save the forest by burning the trees.

• You haven’t lived until you’ve had your nose nearly broken by a headbutt from your toddler. I’m still seeing stars, but my god, I feel alive!
