Notes from the Post-it Wall | Week of September 13, 2020

By David Himmel

• I miss malls being a thing.

• The change of the seasons was far more enjoyable when I was younger. It meant a new school year, new clothes, new classes, new girlfriends. Now it means I have to put on more clothes to walk the dog.

• It’s the Jewish New Year. Hope and pray all you want, but please know that a change of the calendar will not change the mess we’re in. Only our hard work of doing the hard things will clean this up. Well, that and maybe putting a few heads on pikes.

• In my twenties, autumn was nesting season. The time to try to find someone to spend the colder months with. In my forties, autumn is tattoo season. The time to get some new drawings on my body since I won’t be topless in the sun as much as I had been during the summer. It makes the few weeks of healing much easier.

• I often wonder if the people I used to know but have forgotten about remember me. If the Universe is balanced, the answer is No. But then the question becomes, is the Universe balanced?

• My son doesn’t look much like me, so I get real excited when he does something that is clearly a genetic influence of mine. The other morning, buckling him into his car seat to go to school, I kissed him and said, “I love you, Harry.” He looked at me with a deeply passive gaze and replied, “I don’t want to talk, Dada.” And that’s my boy!
