I Like to Watch Ep. 36—Wild Things (1998)
The Professor and the Madman get into it over one of the cheesiest/sleeziest movies of the late nineties, John McNaughton’s Wild Things. The film causes the boys to get into some dicey territory about what is and is not acceptable in film from days gone by.
I Like to Watch Ep. 35—The Mothman Prophecies (2002) w/ Derek Hayes
Don and Don are joined by filmmaker/podcaster Derek Hayes to discuss the Oscars, Derek’s new documentary, and The Mothman Prophecies (the movie, not the actual prophecies…).
I Like to Watch Ep. 34—Big Trouble in Little China (1986) w/ David Himmel
Joining Don & Donnie is Co-Editor of Literate Ape and cinephile, David Himmel and we discuss the best decade for film as well as the greatest mishmash compilation of awesomeness in all of the eighties Big Trouble in Little China.
I Like to Watch Ep. 33—Falling Down (1993)
The boys introduce a new feature and talk some industry scuttlebutt, then launch into a deep dive into Joel Schumacher’s 1993 film Falling Down.
I Like to Watch Ep. 32—Galaxy Quest (1999)
The white dudes with attitudes disagree on the impact of TÁR then dive right into a favorite space comedy for both—Galaxy Quest. The discussion proves that this film is universally appealing to Trek fans (Don) and non-Trek fans (Donnie) alike. Finally Don surprises Donnie with his Trailer Geek choice this week.
I Like to Watch Ep. 31—Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
The boys jump into the musicalization of divinity with 1973’s Jesus Christ Superstar, which according to Hall was written by Salman Rushdie. Don’t ask.
I Like to Watch Ep. 30—Sweeney Todd
What do you get when you get two musical theater geeks geeking out on Tim Burton’s filmed version of arguably the greatest musical written by Sondheim? Some serious musical theater overload!
I Like to Watch Ep. 29—A New Year’s State of Mind
Closing out the year in films, D&D talk New Year’s Eve movies and find that the holiday is pretty bleak with serial killers, cuckolds killing themselves, and cruise ships capsizing. Happy Effing 2023!
I Like to Watch Ep. 28—The Great Christmas Movie Showdown
As D&D approach the end of 2022, they have a showdown: if aliens came down and wanted to see one movie in order to understand the concept of Christmas, which would it be? Don chooses 1984’s BBC version of A Christmas Carol (which Donnie uniformly humbugs). Donnie chooses the Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye musical White Christmas.
Plus a list of the Christmas Day playlists of Christmas-themed films to bolster your holiday in true I Like to Watch fashion.
I Like to Watch Ep. 27—The Best and Worst of 2022 Trailer Geeks
The I Like to Watch Podcast is now one year old and our first anniversary, Don and Donnie go through the fifty+ trailers we were looking forward to during 2022. We were right about some and really wrong about others. Strap in, Professor!
I Like to Watch Ep. 26—Top Three Thanksgiving Movies
Don has a fond attachment to Thanksgiving; Donnie does not. The two cover their favorite (or otherwise) Thanksgiving foods and movies about or taking place on the holiday in between Halloween and Christmas. Just wait until we do Arbor Day movies!
I Like to Watch Ep. 25—The Dead Poet’s Society (1989)
Joining D&D is Donnie’s brilliant partner, Dr. Marylin Winkle, to chime in about one of the most inspirational films ever made: The Dead Poet’s Society.
I Like to Watch Ep. 24—John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978)
It’s Donnie’s favorite Halloween film, aptly named after the holiday and featuring one of most iconic serial killers in cinematic history. Yup. John Carpenter’s Halloween.
I Like to Watch Ep. 23—Jeepers Creepers (2001)
For our first entry for the Halloween month, Don chooses Jeepers Creepers, what Donnie calls a ‘horror deep cut,’ and we get into Donnie’s overwhelming love of the horror genre in general. Good creepy stuff, gang!
I Like to Watch Ep. 22—The Untouchables (1987)
D&D spend an hour gushing over the brilliant Brian DePalma classic The Untouchables.
I Like to Watch Ep. 21—Wall•E (2008)
WALL-E, short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class, is the last robot left on Earth. He spends his days tidying up the planet, one piece of garbage at a time. But during 700 years, WALL-E has developed a personality, and he's more than a little lonely. Then he spots EVE (Elissa Knight), a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy.
I Like to Watch Ep. 20—Jaws (1975)
D&D jump into the deep waters of Speilberg’s megahit, the iconic Jaws, the most splashingly, bloody summer film ever made.
I Like to Watch Ep. 19—One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
After a list of fun but lesser films, D&D tackle the iconic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It was Donnie’s first viewing and remains in Don’s Top Five of All Time.
I Like to Watch Ep. 18—Cocktail (1988)
Joining D&D is another D—David Himmel, co-host of The Literate ApeCast—who loves few things more than the Tom Cruise 1988 schlockfest Cocktail. The other D’s are maybe not completely in love with it but defer to Himmel in this conversation. Zoom recording with three overtalkers is a challenge as you’ll hear…
I Like to Watch Ep. 17—The Last Dragon (1985)
D&D were both in LA so Don went to Donnie’s house and they recorded themselves watching Barry Gordy’s The Last Dragon. This 1985 cultural mashup of kung fu, bad music, terrible fight choreography, and apparently Don’s entire 1980s wardrobe is something else.
