What Do You See?

By Don Hall

I see you
Cheating on your girlfriend
Helping a homeless man across the street
Staring into space at the Metra station

You see me
Stealing office products from work
Protesting against the closing of Chicago schools
Staring back into the little screen

Police brutality is an American tradition
Smartphones make it a visible entertainment
Youthful stupidity caught on camera
Erases deniability with a permanent record

Your Tik Tok posts reveal you in an indelible fashion
Both who you are and who you want me to see
When the digital eye becomes the reliable observer
What value has the human endorsement?

What do you see?
Who do you tell?
