American Shithole #35 — Happy Thanksgiving!
By Eric Wilson
Happy Thanksgiving, Literate Ape editors, columnists, contributors and readers!
I hope this brief holiday note finds you warm and well-stuffed.
I took Bill Maher to heart (before he offended a whole new herd of nerds with his Stan Lee gaffe) when he signed off his last Real Time of the year suggesting we all give ourselves a break from news and politics for a spell.
I’m down with that. I smell some American Shithole Binge TV Reviews coming down the pipeline! I could write four articles in a row just about The Great British Baking Show and not even break a sweat.
I mean, I know Trump is going to fuck that all up. There’s no way we make it to New Year’s Day without at least a handful of revolting, infuriating, heartbreaking developments. No way.
Still, I sure would like to take December off and write about some stupid fucking British television show I absolutely love for a change.
I keep staring at Don Hall’s Problematic Movies of the ’80s series like it’s the greenest grass these politically blurred and bloodshot eyes have ever seen. Then I look at the Shithole docket of spineless wealth addicts I have to write about and my lower lip trembles and the slight ringing in my ears returns.
I feel a strange, possibly pointless obligation to ride this out though. To write about this disruptive time in politics until we either make it through to the other side, or watch in horror as American democracy slips through our fingers.
Hey, maybe we can make it through this one weekend without another mass shooting! How great would that be? One whole American holiday weekend without dead kids!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
