Notes from the Post-it Wall | Week of January 12, 2025
• At a certain point, the answer to your kid’s bazillionth question in thirteen minutes is either God did it or because the plot required it.
• There is no human who earns my respect more than those who brave the frigid, wind-biting single-digit Chicago winters to smoke their cigarettes. That is a commitment like no other. We need more people with a sense of duty that strong.
• I would love for 21-year-old David and 72-year-old David to meet with present-day David right now. 21-year-old David would kick my ass for not having become the person we thought we’d be at this point. And 72-year-old David would kick my ass for being so terrible to present-day David. All this is to say, I need a good ass kicking. We all do. Be mindful of the available perspective. You don’t need time travel to make this possible.
• It is becoming clearer to me with each passing day that some things in life work out not because of effort or pragmatics, but because of chemistry. An intangible chemistry that baffles scientists but makes perfect sense to poets and teenage emo kids.
• Time alone is crucial. It gives your mind the opportunity to process the unfolding shit show that is your everyday.
• Some of the best literature available today will be found in the Young Readers section of your favorite bookstore. (And it’s okay if your favorite bookstore is Barnes & Noble. I mean, they sell toys there, too.)
